This is The Mamaev Kurgan. It is the most famous site in Volgograd and one of Russia's most famous. The reason being that this was the exact place where the war was won. It is a reminder of what was won, at what price, and a memorial for all who paid this price.

The red flags on the sides symbolize victory. The black and yellow stripes on them symbolize the smoke and fire that filled the city during the 200 days of battle.
